The medal arranged as a red star surrounded by a gemset wreath and radiating diamond-set palmettes, the centre engraved with the tughra of Sultan 'Abd al-Hamid II (r. 1876-1909 AD), a circle of green enamel inscribd with the order's motto in thuluth script

Lot Essay

The Order of Charity was instituted in 1878, the year when this medal was commissioned. This order was reserved for women awarded as a taken of the Sultan's esteem or for outstanding charitable work. The words inscribed around the tughra are "humanity, assistance, patriotism". Another medal of the Order of Charity, although smaller, sold at Christie's, 11 April 2014, lot 422.
