Lot Essay
Henri Eugène Philippe Louis d’Orleans, duc d’Aumale (1822-97) was the fifth son of King Louis Philippe I. He was a distinguished soldier but retired to England in 1848 following the overthrow of the Orleans monarchy in the February Revolution. He remained politically active and supported a return to a constitutional monarchy. He returned to France in 1889, having made provision in his Will to bequeath Château de Chantilly and its fabulous collection of art to the Institute of France.
