Recueil de Cent Estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant, gravées sur les Tableaux peints d'après Nature en 1707 & 1708. Paris: Chez Basan, 1714 [but c.1756-1768]. 2° (485 x 330mm). Engraved title with dedication to verso, 7 engraved leaves of text, engraved plate of music and 102 plates of costume, including 3 double-page plates. (Engraved title with small rubbed patch to upper margin, pls 14 and 51 with large repaired tears, the former with the whole leaf backed but without loss, pls 31 and 44 with small marginal tears repaired to verso, the latter just into plate image, pls 72 and 90 with short marginal tears repaired to rectoes, the 3 double-page plates with short tears near gutter but without loss, the last 2 with small marginal chips to corners, light scattered spotting, mainly confined to margins.) Late 18th-/early 19th-century green quarter sheep (extremities heavily rubbed, joints worn but holding).
Second edition of the 'most popular and influential illustration of Turkish dress to date' (Blackmer, of the first edition). The work was commissioned by Charles de Ferriol (1652-1722) French ambassador to the Porte between 1699 and 1709 and illustrates the regional, religious and national costume of the Turkish Empire.
