OLD BELIEVERS – Otvety pustynozhitelei na voprosy Ieromonakh Neofita; tak naz. ‘Pomorskie otvety’. [The Answers of the Recluses to the Question of Hieromonk Neofit; that is ‘The Sea-side Replies’.] Russia, early 19th century.
Illuminated manuscript on paper, 458 leaves, 286 x 215mm. Text on 25 lines per page in red and black in polu-ustav with 2- and 3-line headings. Collation: 1-568, 5710, with Cyrillic alphabetic signatures; with first blank leaf and blank 55/8. Illustration: two full-page portraits on 5/3v and 26/1v, full-page titles on 5/4 and 26/2, decorative headpiece on 1/2, 2/2, 55/2v and 56/1, with decorative initials on 3/1, 4/1v, 4/5v, 26/2v, and 56/1, marginal illustrations of hands and other symbols on some leaves on 5/5v and following. (A few leaves with minor stains.) Contemporary red morocco over wooden boards, stamped in gilt and blind with floral and geometric decorations, enclosing centre-piece in gilt on upper cover, spine stamped in gilt in 5 compartments, edges gauffered and gilt, brass clasps (slightly rubbed at extremities, upper inner joint weak).
A FINE OLD BELIEVER MANUSCRIPT illuminated with colour portraits of Andrei Dionis’evich Denisov (1664/74-1730), a famous teacher, with his brother Semen (1682-1740/41), who are regarded as the authors of this text. The Old Believers were members of the Orthodox Church who were unable to accept the reforms of Patriarch Nikon on the instigation of Peter the Great, and fled into the wilderness.
