BECKFORD COPY OF THE FIRST PLANTIN EDITION. The illustrations are copied from those of the 1547 edition by Jean de Tournes. The short comments on the emblems by Sebastian Stockhamer had previously appeared in the Lyons editions of 1556 and 1561. Although the tools differ, Payne's distinctive style of corner panel can be seen repeated in Maggs Bookbinding in the British Isles (1987), II, pp. 74-76, nos. 216 & 217. Green 72; Landwehr Low Countries (1988) 12; Praz p. 250; Voet 22.
