CHINE, DYNASTIE QING, EPOQUE QIANLONG (1736-1795)
The elephant is modelled standing foursquare with its head turned to one side. Its saddle supports a double-gourd vase which is decorated with the characters da ji ('good fortune'). The saddle cloth is decorated to each side with a wan symbol above waves, all surrounded by lotus scrolls. The light grey body is delicately inlaid with gilt cloisons, imitating the wrinkled hide.
