Lot Essay

The arms are those of the Orne family of Salem, and the monogram is that of Rachel Orne (1746-1774).
A cann matching the present example is engraved with the same coat-of-arms and the monogram EOP for Esther Orne Paine (1774-1854), the niece of Rachel Orne, who married Joseph Cabot (1746-1774). The cann sold in these Rooms 23 January 2014, lot 78.
The Orne coat-of-arms appears on a large service of silver made by Paul Revere for Rachel Orne's sister, Lois Orne (1756-1822), on the occasion of her marriage to William Paine in 1773 (Martha Gandy Fales, Early American Silver, 1970, p. 86, fig. 82 and Kathryn C. Buhler, American Silver 1655-1825 in the Worcester Art Museum, 1979, pp. 42-47).
