Lot Essay

This set comprises Vol. I, Vol. XI, Vol. XIV (part I and II) and another volume starting with Kitab al-Qit'an. This manuscript is copied on a high quality Spanish cream burnished paper typical of luxurious Andalusian manuscripts. Throughout the five volumes, each of large size, the hand of the scribe is controlled, measured and elegant. Undoubtedly this manuscript was copied for a wealthy and learned patron, part of the intellectual elite of the time.

Ibn Rushd al-Jadd (d. 1136 AD) was the grand-father of Averroes (d. 1196 AD) and the author of a number of works on fiqh. Al-bayan wa al-tahsil is probably his most famous work and based on the Mustakhraja min al-asmi'a of Muhammad al-'Utbi al-Qurtubi (d. 868 AD). The Mustakhraja is an anthology of juridical questions compiled by al-'Utbi through sama' (listening) sessions by interpreters of Maliki doctrine. The present volumes are an early copy of the work and were probably copied during the lifetime of Averroes or shortly after his death.

Part XII of another 12th or 13th century copy of Al-bayan wa al-tahsil was offered at Sotheby’s on 5 October 2011, lot 88.
