Lot Essay

Dishes with this classic kenjo design on the base were made for presentation to the family of the Tokugawa Shogun. There is a dish with this design in the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, Arita. For a shard with the same design excavated from the Okawachi kilns, see Seki Kazuo, ed., Nabeshima kozara - Ai Nabeshima kozara to sono shuhen (Small Nabeshima dishes - Small Nabeshima underglazed dishes and peripheral works) (Tokyo: Ribun Shuppan Co., Ltd, 1995), pl. 70.
