Lot Essay

The armor has a fine close-laced two-piece cuirass in semblance of ancient do-maru and haru-maki styles, and an early Edo-period helmet with large protruding rivets in ancient 'hoshi-bachi' (star-helmet) style. The shoulder straps are protected not with the practical leaf-shaped pendant 'gyoyo' of the late Muromachi and Edo-periods, but with the sendan-no-ita and kyubi-no-ita designed for horseback use when the bow was the main weapon of war. The richly-brocaded under-garments, the jacket bearing the same family badge as the armor together with carefully labeled boxes for the helmet, mask, and the large lacquered armor box indicate the care with which this armor has been preserved over generations of the same samurai family.
