A FINE GOLD LETTER-OPENER IN THE FORM OF A MINIATURE PRESENTATION SWORD
CIRCA 1900
With 14ct rose gold blade engraved with foliage, the Royal cypher, the crossed sword and baton of a General officer and the presentation inscription 'PRESENTED BY 199 WOMEN OF MELBOURNE TO MAJOR GENERAL BADEN-POWELL, THE LEADER OF A BAND OF HEROES, WHO KEPT THE FLAG FLYING AT MAFEKING', and 18ct gold guard with crossed enamelled Union Flag and Victorian Red Ensign with the legend 'MAFEKING. 17th MAY. 1900' above, ivory grip-scales, and 22ct gold sword-knot, in velvet- and satin-lined case with handwritten label by Major General Baden-Powell, 12 ¾ in. (32.4 cm.) overall
