Lot Essay

This drawing dates from the year before the artist's death at the age of 86, although remarkably similar in style to that of fifty years earlier. It is very close in spirit to two drawings of rocky landscapes dated 1605 and 1606 which are in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (inv. 1391 and 1972-T. 56), as well as an etching by Boëtius Adams Bolswert (circa 1580-1633), after a landscape by Bloemaert executed in 1615 (Hollstein 357). The drawing can also be compared to the Mountain landscape, dated 1650 like this one, which is in the P. & N. de Boer Foundation, Amsterdam (inv. B 492; Blok, op. cit., no. 61). Two further comparable landscapes dated 1650 were sold in these Rooms, 1 December 1986, lot 8.
