HASSELL, John (1767-1825). Aqua Pictura ... Original Specimens from the Works of Messrs. Payne, Munn, Francia, Samuel, Varley, Wheatley, Young, Christal, Cartwright, Girtin, Clennell, Cox, Prout, Hills, Dewint, P.J. de Loutherbourg, Turner, Owen, and Glover. London: Hassell & Co., [introduction dated 1813, plates dated 1812-18; watermarked 1816-1817]. Oblong 2° (321 x 450mm). 19 plates on 18 sheets, each in four states, hand-coloured aquatint, tinted aquatint, uncoloured aquatint and etched outline, each with a leaf of text describing the artist's technique with colour samples. (A little light spotting and soiling.) Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, top edge gilt (rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: purchased from William Young, Liverpool, 1 April 1934.
Second edition. Abbey states that ‘the idea of this work, Hassell's largest and most interesting publication, was to take a drawing by one of the most celebrated draughtsmen of the age, and to publish four prints showing progressive stages of the work.’ Abbey Life 140 (1st edition of 1813); Tooley 248.
