ALKEN, Henry. A series of etchings headed ‘The Single and Married’; ‘Jack’s Wedding Day’; ‘An Upset – Blowing from the East’; ‘An Upset – Blowing from the West’. London: Thomas McLean, 1826.

Small 2° (360 x 260mm). 4 hand-coloured etched plates. (Some light marginal dust soiling.) Mid 20th-century patterned green boards by Donnelley, backed in cloth, front cover with brown morocco title label, green cloth slipcase. Provenance: purchased 1940.

This rare group of plates combines two scenes of working class and two of affluent middle class married life. In the first plate, the husband of an impoverished working-class family tells a bachelor friend that he no longer has time to attend hangings. In the plate illustrated the husband boasts about his part in a traffic accident, exclaiming to a bleeding coachman and his own distraught wife: ‘Well my good fellow it is of no use saying anything about it now – but it was a magnificent smash – Julia – was it not?’ Not in the bibliographies.
