POLLARD, Robert (1755/6–1839), publisher. Hunting Sketches. London: R. Pollard, Holloway, 1817.

6 hand-coloured etched plates, each with caption and publisher’s imprint, tipped into an album, interleaved. Green morocco gilt by De Sauty, including title-page in pen-and-ink (spine faded); green buckram slipcase. Provenance: purchased at auction in Berlin, 15 February 1932, through the agency of Karl Hiereseman.

‘Plates of greatest rarity’ as Spitz notes, and charming depictions of shooting that could certainly have influenced Henry Alken’s own presentation of the cockney sportsman. It is unlikely that the unsigned prints were actually engraved by Robert Pollard. The ‘“very extensive and entire stock of Robert Pollard engraver, removed from London”’ had been sold in December 1810, when he moved from Islington to Holloway Place. However, his experience as an engraver placed him in good stead as a publisher. He brought out ‘prints of hunting, shooting, racing, angling, and, especially, coaching scenes of considerable elegance and interest’ (Timothy Clayton and Anita McConnell in ODNB). The second plate is watermarked J. Whatman 1816.
