Each oblong and with gadrooned borders, the domed covers engraved twice with a coat-of-arms, with lion mask and foliage handles, on conforming Old Sheffield plate stands, marked on dish, inside cover and on handle, the first pair further marked on cover border

The arms are those of Neave impaling Digby for Sir Thomas Neave, 2nd Bt. (1761-1848) and his wife Francis Caroline (d.1835), daughter of the Very Rev. Hon. William Digby, Dean of Durham, whom he married in 1791.

Lot Essay

Sir Thomas Neave 2nd Bt. (1761-1848), in common with his father was a fellow of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries. He travelled on the Continent acquiring many works of art including a considerable quantity of stained glass thought to have come from Louvain Cathedral. Amongst his acquisitions of plate were a magnificent pair of Dutch silver wall sconces by the 17th century master goldsmith Adrian Van Vianen dated 1622 (Sotheby's, London, 17 June 1971, lot 126) and a French silver basket, Paris, 1638, sold Christie's Geneva, 15 May 1995, lot 168.
