THE YIDETANG COLLECTION OF FINE JADE CARVINGSIn the Tang dynasty classic Zhengguan Zhengyao, 'Essentials of Government in the Zhenguan Reign', by Wu Jing, it is stated that 'the Book of Rites says: Jade without workmanship will not become an object of use. A man without learning will not know the way. Therefore men of the past were diligent in learning and acquired the virtue of yide.'The master of Yidetang came from a patriotic banking family, whose grandfather tirelessly ran campaigns in Hong Kong to fundraise for the Chinese resistance forces during World War II. For generations, members of the family have held high esteem for Chinese jades and developed the penchant for jade collecting. Christie's Hong Kong is privileged to be offering some of the finest pieces from this collection, including various jade pendants and scholar's objects from the Ming and Qing periods, through which we can take a glimpse of the allure and refinement of that bygone era.

The rectangular plaque is carved in low relief on one side depicting Buddha riding on a bull, the other side with an inscription from a sutra, followed by the signature Zigang.
