With the fragmentary half face of a hetaira, with opaque white face, translucent brown elaborate curls hanging over her forehead, translucent amethyst eye with translucent blue outline and brow, on a brick red matrix

Lot Essay

This inlay depicts a New Comedy theatre mask, a form of drama popular in the Roman period. It has been suggested that such inlays may have been used as theatre tickets for wealthy theatre-goers for whom the first two rows of seating were reserved.
