At first glance, The Wrong Body 2 appears to be a work in which golden organisms are consorting together, and two most conspicuous common points are the bitterness and twistedness it annotates. This spread of confusion is in truth trained-sculptor Wang Sishun’s most sincere exploration into flesh and existence.
The “body” is a mere 6.6 cm sculpture, showing the artist’s use of a piece of 20-gram gold which he has shaped by gnawing and biting, and the process of creation and its objective are themselves absurd in an abstract context when the body bumps up against corrosive resistance, and tough, ductile gold fortifies it at that moment, while also infusing vitality. Or is it that the metal diffuses its cold to the entire body? The tooth marks on this work, like DNA, are the traces of the human acts that leave a physical memory on the body, and thereby the contradictions of issues of such elements as human flesh, cognition, material and physicality are discussed. In creating the The Wrong Body Series, the artist built an extremely private space he uses to fill with his own stories and dreams, and each work becomes a reference to the scene of a specific time and place. According to Wang Sishun’s account, this dreamland led him to the conclusion that people only want to see their broken selves and so arrive at a completely mistaken version of the true world”. Only if we observe our true selves can we become self-aware, and only then can we have the ability to understand the world.
In The Wrong Body 2 the fuzzy shape and appearance cause the creative vocabulary to seem obscure, but this is just Wang Sishun unraveling and combing through the layers of physicality and spirituality and thereby attaining a consummate logic.
