SWITZERLAND – CITY OF BERN. 'Der Stadt Bärn Regiments-Buch', manuscript in a fine gothic hand, undated but c.1693;
with later additions, titles and running headings in decorative majuscules, on paper. Approx. 330 leaves, large 4to (388 x 245mm), plus blanks, margins ruled in red. Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, two original brass catches and clasps, the spine titled in manuscript (extremities somewhat worn). Provenance: indistinct armorial stamp on spine.
AN ATTRACTIVE VOLUME RECORDING THE HISTORY AND PRINCIPAL CITIZENS OF BERN. A historical repertory of the city of Bern and its principal offices, the ‘Regiments-Buch’ comprises a brief recitation of the foundation and early history of the city, followed by historical lists of the holders of the main public offices, beginning with the ‘Schultheissen’ (mayors) and the ‘Deutsch-Seckelmeistere’ (treasurers for the German-speaking lands); the heads of the four gilds; the ‘Welsch-Seckelmeistere’ (treasurers for the French-speaking lands); the lords of the ‘kleiner Rat’ (small council); the ‘Herren der Burgeren’ and the great council; the leading officials of the various territories within the Bernese lands; and finally an alphabetical ordering of the leading families of the city, listing the principal office-holders from each family.
The manuscript was executed by a single scribe in c.1693, with addenda in the same, or a very similar, hand up to c.1701. The original scribe left generous space for subsequent updating, and the lists of city office holders were in fact brought up to date by a single hand in c.1751, with a few further additions in the following year.
