WILLIAM HERBERT, 3rd Earl of Pembroke (1580-1630). Manuscript pedigree of the Earls of Pembroke since the Conquest, signed by the scribe George Owen (d.1655), [England, first half of the 17th century, after 1624], DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER.
181 x 150mm. 38 leaves. Full-page coloured armorial and 29 full-page genealogical tables. Contemporary natural vellum, gilt-stamped with the armorial of Sir William Herbert, 3rd Earl Pembroke.
A HANDSOME PEDIGREE PRODUCED FOR THE DEDICATEE OF SHAKESPEARE’S FIRST FOLIO. Tracing the illustrious ancestors of the 3rd Earl Pembroke from Gilbert Strongbow, ‘a valiant and and a Noble Captaine’ in the service of Henry I, this pedigree is in the assured hand of George Owen, the Welsh herald of arms known for comparable works for the Vaughan family, Earls of Carbery, and Colonel Philip Jones of Fonmon. The distinguished co-founder of Pembroke College, Oxford, alongside James I, William Herbert was a patron of William Shakespeare, and one of the ‘incomparable pair of brethren’, beside his brother Philip Herbert, to whom the First Folio was dedicated in 1623. Produced not long after the publication, this fine manuscript represents Owen’s attempt to garner the favour of this prominent and influential aristocrat.
