                                            A CARVED BAMBOO ROOT 'LION' CUP
LATE MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The recumbent lion is carved with its head turned to the side and the face detailed with bulging eyes and teeth bared. A cub is clambering cheerfully on its side. The top of the lion's head is flat to form the base of the cup, and the underside is hollowed and lined with metal to serve as the receptacle.
