Black morocco, flat spine gilt-lettered, green calf doublures, black doeskin flyleaves, edges gilt, original printed wrappers and spine bound in, by Lucie Weill; black half morocco and green wood chemise, black morocco-edged green wood slipcase. Provenance: Florence J. Gould (1896-1983), art collector and patron (presentation inscription; sold Sotheby’s Monaco, 24 June 1984, lot 170); John F. Fleming (1910-1987) (sold Christie’s New York, 18 November 1988, lot 302, noting that this volume was part of Fleming’s personal collection).

FIRST EDITION of the author’s first book. LIMITED EDITION, COPY NUMBER 1, of 30 copies on Vélin Alfa Navarre. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Sagan on the half-title: “Pour Madame Florence Jay Gould à qui je dois mon premier prix et ma première grande joie litteraire, en regrettant son absence et avec l’espoir de la remercier un jour prochain de vive voix. Françoise Sagan.” A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY of Sagan’s first novel, linking the author with her literary patron.
