Black morocco, flat spine gilt-lettered, green calf doublures, black doeskin flyleaves, edges gilt, original printed wrappers and spine bound in, by Lucie Weill; black half morocco and green wood chemise, black morocco-edged green wood slipcase. Provenance: Florence J. Gould (1896-1983), art collector and patron (presentation inscription; sold Sotheby’s Monaco, 24 June 1984, lot 170); John F. Fleming (1910-1987) (sold Christie’s New York, 18 November 1988, lot 302, noting that this volume was part of Fleming’s personal collection).

PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Sagan on the half-title: “Pour Madame Florence Jay Gould à qui je dois mon premier prix et ma première grande joie litteraire, en regrettant son absence et avec l’espoir de la remercier un jour prochain de vive voix. Françoise Sagan.” A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY of Sagan’s first novel, linking the author with her literary patron.
