Engraved portrait of the author, 41 plans, views and maps (some double-page and folding) and 56 engraved illustrations in text (without engraved additional title described in some copies). (Some browning and spotting.) Contemporary vellum over boards (some soiling).
A translation of Offt begehrte Beschreibung der newen orientalischen Reise which was first published 1647. The first edition of Wicquefort's translation appeared in Paris, 1656; the second, “augmentée de plus d'un tiers, particulièrement d'une seconde partie contenant le voyage de Jean Albert de Mandeslo,” Paris, 1659, and Leyden, P. van der Aa, 1719 (4 volumes in 2, folio). The present edition is that of Van der Aa with a new title-page. Dutch versions appeared 1651 (Amsterdam) and later; an English translation, London, 1662.
Olearius travelled as secretary to the Duke of Holstein’s Embassy to Russia, Tartary and Persia to open up trade relations—the first German expedition to Persia. Olearius’ account greatly influenced European opinion of Russia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
