Lot Essay

When sold in 1977, the cabinet was described as being in the style of Pierre Langlois. However, with it's trompe l'oeil marquetry, particularly the manner in which the husk swags are draped over roundels and appear to weave behind the crossbanding of the stand, it would appear to relate more closely to the oeuvre of Messrs. Mayhew & Ince of Golden Square, London. The style must have appealed to the Littlers whose collection also included a marquetry commode attributed to Mayhew & Ince that was also sold from Chestham Park in 1977, lot 182, and again from the same collection as the present lot, Christie's, London, 9 July 2015, lot 154 (£80,500 including premium).
