Lot Essay

The cabinet displays on it's doors a large flower-filled cartouche which is framed by borders of scrolling foliage in the manner of Messrs. Mayhew & Ince of Golden Square, London. They are confidently credited with this design through a group of at least eight serpentine yew-wood and marquetry commodes that use this pattern, including one in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated in P. Macquoid and R.Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1954, vol. II, p.117, fig. 19, and another illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig. 45. It also shows similarities with another commode in the same collection which was attributed to Mayhew & Ince, sold Christie's, London, 9 July 2015, lot 154 (£80,500 including premium).
