1983*** Good for Red, **** Very Good for White
Difficult vintage, hard tannic red wines and rich intense whites.
Warmer weather only arrived late in May kicking off the flowering under good conditions, though relatively cool. Up until the second week of August when rain arrived the summer had started well. This wet period stayed on into September causing big problems of rot. The sunny warm weather which returned mid-September further concentrated the grapes but was also quite favorable to noble rot. Harvest started on 22 September in the Cote de Beaune. Remarkably part of the white grapes in Meursault were affected by botrytis, some even made a Vendange-tardive wine! The reds were quite tannic and hard when young, some stayed this way while others have rounded out over time. A vintage to approach selectively.
Recorked in 2005.
Tasting note: Dark garnet color, brown tile reflections. Nose kirsch, chocolate, racy. Quite a rich mouth feel, well matured. Remarkably good wine in for this challenging vintage. BPF.
