Bouchard Père et Fils, La Romanée 1988
Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits
In original wooden cases
1988***** Outstanding for Red, *** Good for white.
Well-structured reds and fresh crispy whites.
Text book growing season of a mild spring, hot long summer with occasional shower to refresh the vines and clear sunny skies leading up to the harvest. As in Bordeaux the 1988 red Burgundies were never easy wines, yes it was clear they were destined for greatness with a full structure and concentrated aroma’s waiting to come out after a sufficient time in the bottle. The whites are well balanced and fine-tuned, the lesser terroirs lacked a bit of depth. The greatest red wines still continue to develop and need more time to show their true potential.
Tasting note: Very beautiful purple colour, healthy and brilliant. Nose of truffle, fresh, racy, mixture of raisins, new leather and sweet spices. Very powerful, peppery liquorice, with volume. Purity and background. BPF.
