Details
Bouchard Père et Fils, La Romanée 1998
Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits
In original wooden cases
1998**** Very Good for Red, *** Good for White.
Difficult growing season which started with a light frost early in spring, later in May the white wine vineyards of the Cote de Beaune were caught by hail further reducing the size of the crop. June was cool but dry enhancing an even and rapid flowering which was finished in a little over two weeks.
After a warm July followed a scorching hot August month with temperatures peaking 40°C. Some vineyards were showing signs of sun burn. In all the hopes were high until September arrived with cold and wet weather. Fortunately by mid-September almost two weeks of dry sunny weather brought the grapes back into full maturation, especially the vineyards which were harvested late just before the rains came on the 27th made the best wines. In all the reds are strict and tightly structured needing time to show its true potential, not unlike their Bordeaux counter parts. Here and there some green tannins are present. Therefore selection is vital. The whites are fragrant and opulently styled.
Tasting note: Dress with tiled reflections. Nose of sweet spices, very kirsch, very fine, expressive, blond tobacco. Mouth in the continuity of the nose. BPF.
