Lot Essay

The Rolex Submariner reference 5512 is considered an icon in the Submariner family. Along with the reference 5513, these models were a design improvement from their predecessors by adding “crown guards” to help prevent the stem and crown from being damaged by being hit directly against a hard object.

This example impresses with its rare and sought-after "Tulip, " or "Tulipino," coronet to the dial. The shape of the Rolex crown, which resembles that of the tulip flower, is very rare and found only on very early 5512 models. Secondly, the dial has aged and taken on a new and very appealing color. It has changed from black to a deep and rich brown or tobacco color which offers an attractive and honest vintage aesthetic. Lastly, but no less impressive, this watch is retailed by the famous Venezuelan retailer Serpico Y Laino whose signature graces the dial in a silvered print in opposition to the gilt printing of the remaining text.
