The first edition, containing a brother's account of the explorer's mysterious death. Thomas Simpson (1808-1840) was second in command of the valuable 1836-39 Hudson's Bay Company expedition to complete the charting of the Northwest Passage. In 1840, while in present-day Minnesota, Simpson purportedly became deranged and murdered two others before killing himself. However his brother believed instead that he was murdered by three other traveling companions, whose affidavits are published here.
