The first edition account of the first successful negotiation of the Northwest passage in a single ship. Amundsen and his team traversed the Northwest passage in the Gjøa, overwintering on King William Island. Over the course of several years on the ice, Amundsen learned about Arctic survival skills from the Netsilik Inuit—skills which would later enable him to endure the journey to the South Pole. The Gjøa was given to the United States and located in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, until 1972 when it was returned to Norway.
