Lot Essay

Kändler's Taxa of 1740-48 records: 2 Bären nach der Natur in thon boussirt, wie solche gegen einander spielen, vor die Printzeßen von Herford, jeder a 2 Thlr. This may refer to a larger pair of playing bears commissioned by the Princess of Herford, after which this smaller version, probably intended for table decoration, was modelled.
