A RARE CARVED RED LACQUER HAT STAND
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The stand is carved with repeating shou characters, and is surmounted by the domed hat rest carved with dense, leafy floral scroll, which is repeated on the top and sides of the lobed base. The whole is supported on six short feet.

A carved red lacquer hat stand of comparable height (29.5 cm.), but of less elaborate form, in the collection of the British Museum, is illustrated in Hai-Wai Yi-Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections: Lacquerware, Taipei, 1987, p. 170 (Fig. 1).
