A RELIEF-CARVED BAMBOO BRUSH POT
18TH CENTURY
The sides are carved in high relief with a continuous scene of three scholars and an attendant carrying books, two of the scholars standing with the attendant beneath a pine tree while the third scholar holds a staff as he walks ahead towards the large rock face that divides the scene. The brush pot has later-added hongmu mounts.

The carving may represent a scene taken from Su Shi’s (Su Dongpo) two compositions about his journeys to the Red Cliff, commonly referred to as ‘The Former Ode to the Red Cliff’ and ‘The Latter Ode to the Red Cliff’.
