A MAGNIFICENT OFFERING OF HISTORIC COGNACS, FEATURING RARITIES ACQUIRED FROM THE CELLARS OF LA TOUR D'ARGENT AND CAFÉ ANGLAIS

It is always pleasing when important bottles return to our salerooms. The following collection of rare spirits come from the cellars of a connoisseur who acquired a number of the finest bottles from our sale of Historic Cognacs from the Private Cellars of La Tour d’Argent in December 2012. Alongside other bottles of whisky and cognac from this exceptional collection, sit some of the greatest Cognacs ever to pass through Christie’s salerooms.
The bottles are unique, many of them hand-blown one-offs.  Most are dirty and irregular, but there is a sense of historical importance that’s rarely seen. These conditions developed down in the dark cellars of La Tour d’Argent and Café Anglais, undisturbed for decades, in some cases centuries. The oldest bottles – Vieux Cognac Grande Fine Champagne Clos de Griffier Café Anglais 1788 pre-date the French revolution. Extraordinary 2.5 litre pots of Grande Fine Champagne Cognac from 1805 sit side-by-side with rarefied bottles from the famed 1811 vintage. Wait a moment and consider all that has happened around the world whilst these rare, precious liquids have rested undisturbed, quietly becoming the stuff of dreams.  It is humbling to be surrounded by such history, to make your way through a selection of relics and prepare them for the next stage in their extraordinary lives.
