Lot Essay

The present ref. 6262 is a very rare and well-preserved representative of the manual Daytona with the instantly recognizable Paul Newman dial.

Amongst the most highly coveted timepieces, the Rolex Daytona has established itself as a true icon within the world of watch collecting. From its origination, the model has encountered a multitude of variations from dials to cases and movements, all illustrating the incessant quest for innovations of Rolex, while staying true to its heritage.

Part of the most appreciated wristwatches, chronographs such as the present reference are cherished by collectors due to their rarified nature. The 6262 was introduced 1970 as the sister reference of the 6264 and in production for a very short time between 1970 and 1972. Offered with the upgraded caliber 727 as well as last version with pump chronograph pushers, differed from the 6264 through its metallic bezel graduated to 200 units.

A strong favorite for many, the present chronograph features a very coveted white exotic Paul Newman dial contrasting the black subsidiary registers. Enhancing its appeal by its well preserved stainless steel case, with well-defined proportions and edges and a correct stainless steel case back stamped 6239. The present wristwatch is doubtlessly a very attractive and rare example of the reference.

Reference 6262 is illustrated and described in Rolex Daytona - a legend is born by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, Giovanni Dosso, pp. 110-130.
