Further details
JACOB CATS, A STREET IN AMSTERDAM WITH UNLOADING OF BARRELS
BLACK CHALK, BRUSH, BROWN WASH
In this large sheet, Cats shows a view of the Leiden ferry terminal on the Leidse Veer at the Singel in Amsterdam. To the right ships are being loaded, while to the left a house is shown with a sign ‘SCHILDER’ (painter), which can be identified as that of the glazier and mirror gilder Jan Groeneveld and his son, the painter Adolf Groeneveld, and one wonders whether the painter descending the steps could be identified as the painter himself. The house next door, with cabinets on the street, is that of the cabinetmaker Jacobus den Dekker.

To serve the demand of collectors, Cats often made repetitions of his own drawings. The present sheet is such an example; it is a close repetition of a drawing, in the same technique, signed and dated 1785, now at the printroom of Leiden University (inv. PK-T-145; see C. Dumas, in Goltzius to Van Gogh. Drawings and Paintings from the P.&N. de Boer Foundation, exhib. cat., Paris, Fondation Custodia, and Amsterdam, P. & N. de Boer Foundation, 2014, p. 228, fig. 104a). A further version, apparently undated, is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (B. Gerlagh, Kijk Amsterdam 1700-1800. De mooiste stadsgezichten, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Stadsarchief Amsterdam, 2017-2018, p. 116), while another, highly finished sheet in watercolour and dated 1799, is in the Stadsarchief, Amsterdam (inv. 010001000795; see exhib. cat. Paris and Amsterdam, op. cit., p. 228, fig. 104b; fig. 1).

A pendant to the Leiden drawing, showing the Rotterdam and The Hague ferry terminals and also dated 1785, is in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-T-1899-A-4204); a repetition of that sheet from 1789 is in the P. & N. de Boer Foundation, Amsterdam (ibid., no. 104, ill.).

Lot Essay
