Lot Essay

On October 8, 1927 Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees completed what many consider to be the finest season in MLB history. The Yankees had ended the regular season with a record of 110-44, Ruth had set a new mark of 60 home runs for the season, and they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series 4 games to 0. Christy Walsh was the promotional agent for Ruth and other star players of the era, and knew an opportunity when he saw one. Seeking to capitalize on the Yankees historic season, Walsh organized a three week barnstorming tour of 21 cities for sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Walsh billed the tour as "a rivalry between Babe and Gehrig" equal to the World Series itself. Both players were happy to oblige Walsh and embark on the Tour, as was in vogue during the period providing the opportunity for valuable additional revenue after the season. Fans flocked to local towns and stadiums to see the two star players along with local teams playing in various barnstorming games. The tour ended in Los Angeles as the one of the most successful of its type, greatly increasing the visibility of Ruth and Gehrig to their fans across the country. Artifacts of significance from the Bustin Babes and Larrupin Lous Tour are exceedingly scarce to which we present one of the more elite pieces within that limited population.
Original "Bustin Babes" hat as worn by Ruth of a white body and navy blue bill having "BB" felt lettering across the front. Interior measures between 7 ¼-7 3/8 (consistent with other documented Ruth hats) having chain stitched "Babe Ruth" name identification on interior leather band. Additional Spalding manufacturer's stamp is also found on the interior leather band. Evident use is visible throughout presenting in outstanding original condition. Front leading edge of the underside of the bill displays a small area of fabric loss to the surface along with a few scattered surface holes. Unique and instantly recognizable hat style which places among a very elite number of surviving Babe Ruth uniform pieces of extraordinary demand. Includes LOA from MEARS Authentication/Dave Grob: EX
