Dickens’s Life in a fine morocco extra binding, inset with a Cosway-style portrait of Dickens as a young man after the famous painting by Daniel Maclise. First edition.
Three volumes, octavo (212 x 132mm). Engraved portrait frontispieces. Full green crushed levant morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for J.L. Hudson Company, covers with gilt-ruled and floral borders enclosing a large gilt central decoration of fleurons connected by pointillé rules, the compartments filled with stylized diamond ornaments, the center of each cover reproducing a differing signature of Dickens in gilt, spines in six compartments with five raised bands, board edges gilt, gilt floral turn-ins, mustard watered-silk linings, vol. 1 with brown crushed levant morocco upper doublure set with portrait miniature on ivory, in metal frame surrounded by recessed gilt-tooling and small blue morocco inlaid flowers, gilt-stamped lion atop initials "C.D." above portrait and "1812-1870" gilt-stamped below; all edges gilt and partly gauffred, stamp-signed by the binders on turn-ins; original cloth covers bound in at end of each vol (a few hinges just showing).
