PASSE, Crispin van de (1589-1670)
Altera Pars Hortus Floridi in qua praeter flores varia etiam reperiuntur aborum fructiferarum, fructicum, plantarum quoque et herbarum medicinalium genera. [Utrecht & Arnhem: Crispin van de Pass and J. Jansson, 1616].
Final part of Passe's celebrated Hortus Floridus with finely coloured engravings by a contemporary hand. This is the Latin text issue of one of the most famous and influential of the early florilegia. Hunt 199 with a note suggesting the present lot might be in a slightly later variant; Nissen BBI 1494; Pritzel 6972; Savage 'The "Hortus Floridus"' in Transactions of the Bibliographical Society, second series IV, pp.181-205.
Small oblong folio (192 x 257mm). Letterpress text in Latin, engraved Cognoscite Lilia epigraph and 55 plates (only, of 61, lacking plates 5, 6, 42, 43, 50 and 51), all but one plate with 2 figures on each, all finely hand-coloured by a contemporary hand (very short marginal tear without loss on plate 4, occasional light browning, staining and offsetting, more heavily affecting about 10 plates, light spotting to verso of final leaf). Contemporary vellum (lightly soiled, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: ?E.H. (ink initials on epigraph).
