Recht Ghebruyck ende Misbruyck Van tydlicke Have. Amsterdam: Dirck Pietersz, 1620.
The Landwehr copy of a rare Dutch emblem book with engravings fully coloured by a contemporary hand. RBH/ABPC record no other coloured copy at auction. Bernardus Furmerus’ De rerum usu et abusu, upon which this translation was based, was a compendium of wisdom on avarice, poverty, fortune and justice, first published by Christopher Plantin in Leiden in 1575. Coornhert’s Dutch translation was first issued in 1585, also by Plantin, and was followed by a second edition issued by Pietersz in 1610 and this third and most extensive edition in 1620. Landwehr 179.

Quarto (199 x 152mm). Engraved portrait of the author on title and 25 engraved emblems in the text by J.H. Wierix, all vividly coloured by a contemporary hand, woodcut initials hand-coloured (minor marginal staining in a few leaves). Late 19th-century blind-stamped vellum, manuscript title on spine. Provenance: ‘M. Isaak’ (inscription on colophon) – John Landwehr (leading bibliographer of emblem books, 1924-2015; bookplate).
