Blaeu's 'atlas of Scotland is the first printed county atlas of that region' (Van der Krogt II, p.266). This is the second edition as issued as part of the Latin edition of the Atlas Maior, and contains 55 finely hand-coloured engraved maps comprising 1 of 'Albion', 48 of Scotland and 6 of Ireland. Folio (510 x 325mm). Engraved pictorial title with letterpress overslip, and 55 engraved maps all with contemporary hand-colouring, all but one double-page (map of Aberdeenshire with short tear in bottom margin at gutter and bottom edge lightly creased, very short marginal split in gutter of Sterlingshire without loss, small area of worming in fore-edge of last 4 text leaves, some light scattered spotting, soiling and offsetting). Publisher's vellum, yapp edges, covers panelled in gilt with central arabesque, spine with green morocco gilt spine labels, gilt edges (lacking silk ties, small portion of headcap defective, short split at foot of spine without loss, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Frank Graham (20th-century bookplate).
