Venus and Vulcan at the Forge
engraving, mid-1550s, on laid paper, proprietary watermark P. PRICARD in a Shield with Flower and Letter B (Briquet 9613, L. & L. 44), a very fine, early impression of the rare first state (of four), before the publisher's address, printing with intense contrasts and remarkable sculptural quality, with touches of burr on Vulcan's body and near the monogram, trimmed just outside the subject, a few small repairs and minor defects
