This delicate portrait demonstrates some of the main characteristics of the portraits of Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674), notably the subtle colours and the careful psychological rendering of the features of the unknown man. The excellence of the artist's brushwork is evident in the precise treatment of the model's complexion, and special attention is paid to the rendering of the grey hair at the temples. Although we do not know his identity, his clothes suggest that the model is either a priest or a magistrate, and it is likely that he belonged to the Jansenist milieu with which Champaigne was so closely associated.

Ce portait délicat reprend les principales caractéristiques des portraits de Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674) : des coloris subtils, et une interprétation des traits de l’homme inconnu qui frôle la psychologie. L’excellence du pinceau de l’artiste se manifeste dans le traitement précis des carnations du modèle, et une attention spécifique est portée au rendu des cheveux gris au niveau des tempes. Bien que nous ne connaissions pas son identité, ses habits suggèrent que le modèle est soit prêtre, soit magistrat, et nous pouvons imaginer qu’il fait partie du milieu janséniste avec lequel Champaigne est si étroitement lié.
