Property from an American Family CollectionIn 1920, Frank L. Finnell (1888-1967) arrived in Beijing aboard the SS Nanking to work as the Purser for the U.S. Delegation to China. He worked in that role until 1924, when he started the Baltimore Clipper Importing Company. Marie Hinman (1894-1980) moved to Honolulu in 1918 to work as a stenographer for the Territorial Governor of Hawai’i and traveled to Japan in 1922 to continue her stenography career. She survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and was evacuated to Beijing, where she met Frank and the two were married in 1927. The newlyweds soon returned to America, where their only child Margaret was born in 1928. The family subsequently returned to Beijing in 1931, with Frank continuing his import and export business and Marie opening an American dress shop. However, with breakout of World War II, Marie and Margaret left in November 1940 with their possessions on the SS Mariposa, with Frank following in May 1941. The Finnell's reunited and settled in Berkeley, California. The furniture collected during the family’s days in Beijing have resided with the family since that time.Property from an American Family Collection
