Having moved to France at the age of fourteen, Bonington became well acquainted with a number of French artists, most notably Eugène Delacroix and Antoine-Jean Gros. It is probable that these two drawings were sent to Madame Perrier by Bonington in 1824, following a request from her to supply her and her daughters with information on women’s fashion.

Lot Essay

Ayant déménagé en France à l’âge de 14 ans, Bonington s’est familiarisé avec un certain nombre d’artistes français, notamment Eugène Delacroix et Antoine-Jean Gros. Il est probable que ces deux dessins aient été envoyés à Madame Perrier par Bonington en 1824, à la suite d’une demande de celle-ci de lui fournir, ainsi qu’à ses filles, des informations sur la mode féminine, notamment les différents tissus, ici l’organdi, cette très légère mousseline de coton d’Égypte.L’attribution a été confirmée par Patrick Noon après examen photographique des œuvres en 2015.
