Lot Essay

A closely related seated hound in the same palette is illustrated in Cabinet Portier 100 Ans 1909-2009, Paris, fig. 577, p. 126. The decorative scheme on the present lot may be compared with the pair of Arita puppies, circa 1670-1680, in the collection of Burghley House, Stamford, listed in the 1688 Burghley House Inventory. A related pair of Arita hounds sold at Sotheby's London, 5 November 2021, lot 15; a pair of Arita puppies of a different model sold at Christie's New York, 22 October 2022, lot 363.
