Lot Essay

The present painting follows Lucas Cranach the Elder's print of the same subject, published in 1590 (see Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 41.1.160). The artist of this work has omitted the coats of arms of the Elector of Saxony, visible in the woodcut at upper left.
