inscribed 'Deeze Tafels zyn gemaakt na de ondervinding volgens welke geobserveert is./ Dat op deeze Kusten de Vloed 4 ½ Uur in trekt, en de Ebbe 7 ½ Uuren afgaat./ Dat het Water 3 Uuren ryst, 7 Uuren valt, ende de twee overige Uuren vaneen volgety stilstaat./ Dat het Water in 3 ½ uur niet meer gezakt is op het Uur dat hier boven genoteertstaat laag water te zyn, en Eerst begint/ at te gaan een Uur na dat hier boven genoteer staat hoog water te weezenof (tgeenop’tzelveuytkomt) dat de Ebbe nog wel/ 1 ½ Uur gaat zonder dat het Water meer valt, ende Vloed nog wel een Uur zonder dat het water meer ryst, waar uyt volgt/dat op den Droogen by stil hoog water maar twee Voeten water meer is, als by stil laag water, niettegenstaande het water by yder/ gety op den Droogen voor de Maas 6, en op den Droogen voor Goedereede omtrent 7 Voeten op, endeafgaat, dog/ hoger op na proportie minder en dat by Westelyke en Noordelyke winden de Vloed en by Oostelyke en/ Zuidelyke Winden de Ebbe langer duurt als ordinair' (center)

Lot Essay

The Dutch inscription explains that the chart refers to the water tides of the Maas and Goereese Gat waterways in the Netherlands. The precise calculations and description were most likely intended for use by sailors. The drawing is related to a printed version of the table by Jan Caspar Philips (1736-1775), which presents an architectural frame adorned with coat of arms featuring the Dutch lion, Neptune, and a river god (fig. 1; inv. RP-P-1906-1886, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). The charming scene with fishermen and sailors drawn below the chart does not appear in the printed version.
